Levitra’s patent is set to expire in October 2018. But as of June 2018, Bayer doesn’t have any plans to make or market Levitra as an over-the-counter (OTC) erectile dysfunction drug. However, French pharmaceutical company, Sanofi, has acquired the right to make all applications for OTC approval of Levitra in the United States, Australia, Canada, and Europe when Levitra’s patent expires. But there are a number of regulations and concerns for over-counter ED medication.
Over-the-Counter ED Medication: LevitraJust because the patent on Levitra expires in October 2018, doesn’t mean that over-the-counter Levitra is a guarantee. OTC Levitra faces enormous obstacles in the United States and Europe. Pfizer faced similar difficulties back in 2008 when they tried to gain approval for OTC Viagra sales. Levitra is a prescription medication for a number of reasons including potentially dangerous drug interactions with other medications and even daily vitamins and natural supplements. It’s also important to take the proper dose of ED medication to avoid harmful side effects. More isn’t always better, and concerns about the potential for misuse, the complicated educational material needed to accompany the medication, and the fact that the underlying medical conditions leading to ED would go untreated, are all problems for over-the-counter Levitra.
Erectile Dysfunction Prescription Medication & TreatmentErectile dysfunction doesn’t happen for no reason. In fact, ED is usually a sign of a much more serious underlying health condition like:
- heart disease
- high cholesterol
- low testosterone
- nerve damage
- and more

Erectile dysfunction (ED) comes in all degrees, from achieving a minimally diminished erection to being unable to experience even a minor erection. Anyone with ED should see a doctor to make sure they don’t have a health problem. However, that does not mean everyone needs a pill to improve their erections. A 70-year old man with a significant decrease in his capacity to maintain an erection may be in perfect synch with his spouse who enjoys their intimacy for as long as it lasts with his doing what he can. He may be happy with their shared intimacy as it exists. On the other hand, a 37-year old, single man may want to know an occasional issue with erections will not interfere with a new relationship. The situation could just as easily be reversed. Whether a medication is needed or not can change as someone’s life situation changes, and that is true at any age. There are few social absolutes when it comes to treating ED.
